No amount of blame game and arrests of business leaders will be the solution to our quagmire

By Kudzai Kuwaza GOVERNMENT has been told that no amount of arrests of business people will solve various problems that have crippled the economy.

There has been a massive crackdown on business leaders by government who are accused of fuelling the widening disparity between the official exchange rate and the parallel market. The hammering of the local unit has resulted in the erosion of incomes amid skyrocketing prices of basic commodities indexed against the parallel market rate.

Speaking at the ongoing CEO Africa Roundtable annual conference being held in Victoria Falls, CEO Africa Roundtable chairman Oswell Binha warned government that without constructive dialogue between government and business, there will be no solution to the current economic crisis characterised by increasing annual and monthly inflation.

“No amount of blame game and arrests of business leaders will be the solution to our quagmire,” Binha said.

He called for “sober” dialogue pointing out that there is no magic bullet to find solutions to the numerous challenges affecting the economy.

He said economic stability will only materialise if government put in place policies that spur growth.

In her opening remarks, Industry minister Sekai Nzenza said the government is ready to engage in dialogue to address the challenges bedeviling the country.

“We as a government are really prepared to listen and engage in a meaningful way,” she said.

Nzenza said government will take on board criticism if it is constructive.

She pointed out that the investment climate in the country has improved drastically as a result of the policies it had put in place.

The three day conference will end on Friday.
