BY VARAIDZO MUDEWAIRI HEALTH and Child Care deputy minister John Mangwiro has appealed for partnerships to address the shortage of radiotherapy equipment essential in detecting and treating non-communicable diseases such as cancer.
Mangwiro said only one radiotherapy machine was working at public health institutions, forcing patients to access expensive radiotherapy services at private health institutions.
In a speech read on his behalf by Ministry of Health chief director Isidore Dube, during the opening of a regional workshop on development of a curriculum for radiotherapy technologists held in Harare yesterday, Mangwiro said: “We value the harmonisation of radiotherapy training in Africa. As of now, you may be aware that our major equipment in radiotherapy is down, hence the need for collaboration.”
Mangwiro said the United Nations sustainable development goal 3 touches on issues of access to good health and wellbeing and to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.
