By OBERT SIAMILANDU ZIMBABWEAN photographers have been urged to embrace wildlife filming and photography after failing to participate in the first edition of the Benjamin Mkapa Photography Awards last year.
Addressing delegates at the just-ended second edition of the Benjamin Mkapa African Photography Awards in Harare, Environment, Climate, Tourism, and Hospitality Industry minister Mangaliso Ndlovu said Zimbabwean photographers were conspicuous by their absence in the awards.
“I, therefore, would like to encourage Zimbabweans to embrace and partake in future renditions of the Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards. It inspires the African people to embrace and engage with nature and raises awareness. It reminds us of the unique natural heritage endowed to us, and the unique relationship we have to our wild animals and wild spaces,” Ndlovu said.
African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) country director Olivia Mufute said the organisation was using the competition to celebrate people who work tirelessly to conserve wildlife.
The Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards is an annual competition organised by AWF and Nature’s Best Photography.
It focuses solely on Africa, the majesty of its wildlife, and the unique issues that will determine the future of Africa’s wildlife, its people, and wild spaces.
The late Mkapa, after whom the awards are named, was a former president of Tanzania, and an AWF trustee.
