Gokwe DMO, DNO in funds abuse storm

GOKWE South District Hospital management has allegedly abused funds meant to pay staff undergoing training programmes in the area.

It is alleged that the funds were donated by development partners.

Workers, who spoke to Southern Eye on condition of anonymity, said morale was very low due to the embezzlement.

They alleged that the district medical officer (DMO) Noah Chiridza and district nursing officer (DNO) Tinny Mahlangu looted funds meant to pay allowances for village health workers during training.

‘’We have witnessed a lot of double dipping by the DMO and DNO, who have been benefiting from allowances meant for programmes that will be running concurrently.  For instance, at one time, the DMO and DNO went to an infection prevention control training seminar in Bulawayo. When they came back, they claimed allowances for that particular training, and also claimed allowances for village health workers’ training, which they did not attend,” one of the staff members said.

Southern Eye is also in possession of an audio recording where the DMO is heard threatening not to sign staff approval forms for allowances if he is not involved in every training programme.

Chiridza, however, denied allegations of embezzlement.

“As the DMO, my duty is to plan, organise, manage, co-ordinate and implement health-related activities in the district,” he said.

“My duty is to ensure that all programmes in the district are done above board, and that all due process is followed as recommended by the Health ministry.”

Efforts to get a comment from Mhlanga were fruitless as she was not picking up calls.
