BULAWAYO-BASED playwright, director and producer John Mabuyane has said the production of their forthcoming drama series Umndeni: The Rightful Heir is at an advanced stage and fans should expect it on the small screen soon.

Written by Mabuyane and Elton Sibanda, the drama series that explores family dynamics on issues of wealth, poverty, inheritance disputes, culture and religion was produced by Forster McBird, while Arthur Evans and the former are executive producers.

The drama’s first trailer premiered on YouTube last week with the second trailer set to premiere soon.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Mabuyane said viewers should brace for real drama, adding that they would not be disappointed.

“Umndeni: The Rightful Heir is inspired by my life story. I have a hunger to tell family stories. There is lots of drama in most houses, inspiring, edutaining, shocking and daring. I have a hunger to unpack what is hidden behind closed doors in most families,” he said.

Evans said the drama involved the best and worst of human nature, that one can identify with, raised a lot of questions and try to correct a lot of misgivings in life.

“I am excited about the project, this is just a teaser to plant a seed in people’s minds so that they know something is happening and we are thrilled to release the first trailer,” he said.

Evans said the storyline would be shown over two trailers, one that is commentary to every family, household and something that involves death, hope, betrayal and backstabbing.

“This is a story that literally cuts across and divides anybody. It is going to be an eye-opener for people. The second trailer will reveal a little bit more and we are yet to give a position in relation to where it stands, where one can watch it and who is going to be involved,” he said.

“I am excited to be working with John, the cast has been amazing, the crew has been amazing and it’s something that is literally going to make people think of their next step in life.”
