THE late South African musical giant Steve Kekana might have breathed his last, but he leaves behind a strong and rich Zimbabwean connection history that must be captured.

Part of Kekana, who died last week in Polokwane, lived with us and will forever, footprints never lie.

Kekana, who had more than 20 albums to his name, made a surprise appearance at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) in 2012.

During that visit, he staged a performance in Harare’s First Street.

It was his performance of the song Cecilia by the late Zimbabwean music legend James Chimombe then that connected him with many Zimbabweans.

The old will remember that when he reproduced Cecilia about a year after Chimombe released the song, Kekana’s version made it into the British charts.

In some interviews, Kekana was open about his adoration of local legend Chimombe so much that he recorded the rendition in both English and Shona.

He also featured at the inaugural Miss Malaika in 2001, which was won by Brita Masalethulini.

Masalethulini, a farm girl from the outskirts of Harare, had just realised her dream and Kekana was there to sing for her and Zimbabwe.

It is no wonder that most people on the continent referred to him as the Steve Wonder of Africa, I elect to make him The Wonder of our time.

Go well Kekana, while you ran your race, you rocked.
