THE UNVEILED musical group, which had carried the country’s hopes to the finals of this year’s edition of the pan-African Old Mutual Amazing Voices competition, fell short at the last hurdle as South African group Hush SA emerged the ultimate US$100 000 prize winners on Sunday.

The eight-member (four women and four men), Harare-based group had showed its potential, making it to the competition’s top three, rubbing shoulders with South Africa’s Hush and Nigeria’s 121 Selah.

Curtains for the reality singing competition, that also had Effect from Bulawayo who fall out of the running earlier in the competition, came down at Sun City in South Africa after three months of singing to impress both judges and viewers.

The competition winners (Hush SA) are a six all-male gospel group formed as a brotherhood of childhood friends spanning over a decade.

In a statement, Multichoice Zimbabwe general manager Norman Raisbeck said the Zimbabwean group had given a good account of itself at the competition.

“We are proud that The Unveiled and Effect represented our country well. We will continue to air content which showcases and recognises great African talents and our rich heritage,” he said.

Old Mutual head of brand, Thobile Tshabalala, said their purpose was to champion mutually positive futures across all the African markets in which they operated.

“This competition enables us to connect with Africans through the universal language of music and demonstrate that with the right financial partner, anyone can do great things and become their exceptional best,” she said.

“We have seen exactly this with the winners of Season 2 Amazing voices and congratulate Hush SA for their well-earned success.”

The competition’s second season for 2020/21 went ahead despite initial fears that the global COVID-19 pandemic would stop it in its tracks.

Old Mutual, the sponsors of Amazing Voices, devised a digital online audition process that commenced in October last year to allow interaction with contestants.

This change attracted increased number of 546 video entries from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and South Africa as unsigned talent continued to showcase their gifts in the premier pan-African singing competition.

This year’s edition featured talented and unsigned groups from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa of no less than four members who specialise in the pop, gospel and RnB genres.

Judges for this year’s edition were local Afro-pop and RnB powerhouse Ammara Brown, Evelle, a previous Nigerian Idols winner, singer and collaborator, Kenya’s Filah Tuju, renowned as a performer, voice coach, writer and producer and founder of a music academy, Ghana’s Trigmatic, a multi-award winner rapper, composer and songwriter and South Africa’s Vusi Nova, the best Afro album and best male awards winner.
