MORE than 760 people in Matabeleland North province were arrested for contravening COVID-19 lockdown regulations in the past two weeks.

Matabeleland North province police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda yesterday said the 760 were nabbed for unnecessary movement during curfew, failure to properly wear face masks, as well as shebeen owners who were arrested for operating illegal businesses.

“I can confirm that on many occasions, and acting on tip-offs, members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Matabeleland North province have arrested offenders for flouting the COVID-19 regulations,” she said.

“For the record, 301 people were arrested in Hwange district for flouting the COVID-19 regulations, and this included shebeen owners. A total of 86 were arrested in Victoria Falls, 220 were arrested in Lupane, and 158 were arrested in Nkayi district within two weeks.”

Banda urged people to report businesspeople who flout COVID-19 regulations, adding that they will be rolling out awareness campaigns in enforcing COVID-19 regulations.

“We, therefore, encourage the public to report any business owners who choose to disregard the contemporary COVID-19 rules. We commend our various stakeholders who are partnering with the police in our province in carrying out awareness campaigns and enforcement of the regulations,” she said.
