The Mashonaland West Golf Union (Mawegu) Amateur Golf Championship held this weekend was a success as it witnessed a huge turnout of golfers.

The tournament was held at Kadoma Golf Club Royal with few spectators allowed.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the sporting fraternity and also the attendance of players and spectators, Mawegu Golf Club vice-captain Bruce Newman said he was impressed by the high turnout of golfers this year.

“Fifty-four players in total took part which is more than the last two years,” Newman said.

The tournament started with 36 holes on Saturday and then 18 holes on Sunday.

Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, who is on a golf scholarship at University of Drexel in the United States, was the winner of the Mawegu Amateur 2021 Golf Champs over 54 holes on Saturday and Sunday.

He bagged the title after posting scores of 76, 75 and 76 for a gross total of 227, shaking off his closest competitor Clifford Sibanda of Warren Hills Golf Club who posted 79, 80 and 73 for a gross total 232.

In third position was Bradley Kulaisi of Royal Harare Golf Club who came out with 79, 79 and 80 for a total 239 for his three golf rounds.

Also making the top 10 to earn valuable national order of merit points from 4th position descending in that order were Trust Makamidzana, Rasheed Mohammed, Raphael Jazi, Lloyd Dhaka, Dylan Mangabhai, Innocent Mukumba and Tariro November.

In terms of performance, Newman said that the best score was much the same as the last two years, but not as good as the best by Scott Vincent in 2010.

Vincent is now a professional and playing in the Asian and European tour.

Newman also extended his gratitude to their long-time sponsor Spar Zimbabwe who injected US$2 000 for the whole event.

“A big thank you to Spar Kadoma and other stakeholders for sponsoring various requirements for the hosting of the Mawegu Amateur and they have done so for the last couple of years. Mashonaland West Golf Union province houses Kadoma, Chegutu, Chinhoyi, Mulota Hills, Cam & Motor Mine and Norton Golf Clubs.”
