Masvingo province on Wednesday recorded 65 new COVID-19 infections as the surge in the cases of the highly infectious respiratory disease continues.

According to statistics availed by the provincial COVID-19 taskforce spokesperson Rogers Irimayi late on Wednesday night, out of 384 tests done in the province, Masvingo district recorded 27 new cases, while Chiredzi, which has been declared a hotspot, had 32 new cases.

Gutu and Bikita districts had three new cases each.

This brings the number of active cases to 337 in the province, which has so far recorded 72 deaths.

Recoveries stood at 171, while the cumulative positive cases are 3 106. Those who recovered are 2 697.

Irimayi said more screening needed to be done to identify suspected cases for testing.

A fortnight ago, 63 students at the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe-run Morgenster Teachers College tested positive to the virus, leading to the closure of the institution.

The outbreak at Morgenster came after another teacher training institution, Bondolfi, run by the Roman Catholic Church, recorded close to 100 cases.

They have all since recovered.
