TODAY’S celebrations of the Bulawayo Day will mark the start of the second edition of the annual Bulawayo Arts Festival which runs until Saturday.

Bulawayo Day, commemorated on June 1, seeks to celebrate the city’s history and the day the country’s second capital earned city status.

The festival, to be officially opened by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will have some shows for a physical audience while others will be beamed on Bulawayo Arts Festival TV (YouTube channel).

Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing last Wednesday Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the Second Republic was committed to the promotion and development of the creative industry.

“This year’s festival is scheduled to be held from June 2 to 5, 2021. The main festival, which will largely remain digital due to COVID-19 control measures, will feature two main high-profile programmes, namely the launch of the Bulawayo urban heritage and eco-tourism programme (June 3) and the creative and cultural industries conference (June 3 to 4),” Mutsvangwa said.

Festival director Saimon “Mambazo” Phiri said: “The eco-tourism initiative will see tours to cultural heritage destinations and a day-long seminar on sustainable eco-tourism. There shall be an interactive conference to be held on Thursday and Friday at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

“Within the auspices of the 2021 Bulawayo Arts Festival, Bulawayo City Council in partnership with Nhimbe Trust will host a two-day conference from June 3 to 4 at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.”

This year’s festival will see performances from Madlela Sikhobokhobo, Qeqeshiwe, Mzoe 7, Novuyo Seagirl, Holy Ten, Poptain, Mwenje Mathole, Mimmie Tarukwana, Asaph, Doc Vickela, Mandla Da Comedian, Fusion 5 Mangwiro, Hwabaraty, Snowy, among others.
