BULAWAYO-BASED author and poet Mthulisi “KingKG Gatsheni” Ndlovu  is eyeing an international award after he submitted his anthology titled Ubuntu (The Raw Truth Unravelled) for the Global African Authors Awards set for July 31.

The 51-page poem, edited by multi-award winning poet Philani Nyoni, made history by being the longest published poem in the Zimbabwean book industry.

Global African Authors Awards is an annually-celebrated writers awards ceremony founded by respected literary enthusiast and author Thyssen-Ambursley. It seeks to honour all children’s and adult’s authors across the globe.

KingKG Gatsheni told NewsDay Life & Style yesterday that one of his mentors and chief editor of Ubuntu Afro-publishers, Nyoni encouraged him to submit his work for award consideration.

“Nyoni has won the award once, I think he feels like I can do it too, then who am I to doubt? The other reason is that I personally believe that my works are unique and outstanding,” he said.

“The inspiration to submit for the international awards has also been necessitated by one of my look-ups to literary giants Tsitsi Dangarembga, her recent award-winning works truly inspired me a lot and it shows that if you believe in yourself, nothing is impossible.”

KingKG Gatsheni said he wrote from the heart and for the ordinary people.

“I strongly believe I will at least get a nomination at the Global African Authors Awards and that will mean a lot to a mere young man like me from Plumtree,” he said.

“I encourage especially up-and-coming female writers or poets to take part in these competitions, it goes a long way, remember it is not all about winning, but also it does a lot to a writer’s profile, experience and literary growth.”

He expressed gratitude to people he said always supported his works and encouraged him to keep on writing.

“I appreciate the Ubuntu Afro-publishers team, poets and writers, Gourd of consciousness and my family for their unwavering support. I also appreciate Marshal Chiza for typesetting the book and CMG Solutions for the outstanding book cover design that has always got people’s tongues wagging,” he said.
