Support female gospel artistes: Doka

UNITED KINGDOM- BASED Zimbabwean gospel singer Jane Doka says the gospel music industry is fast revolving and becoming competitive, adding that female musicians have to be supported to ride out of the current wave in order to advance the word of God.

Doka, who stepped into the music industry in 2008 with the release of her first album called Nditumeyi, told NewsDay Life & Style that culture stigmatises female musicians.

“The intersectionality of a culture which perpetually sees women as less equal and the stigma attached to music systematically creates a disadvantage to women.

“I am not ashamed nor do I look down on myself or let others look down on me because I am a woman,” she said.

“I wish I had started being aggressive sooner with my gospel music in terms of packaging and production.

“I have had my fair share of the challenges that women encounter in the music industry, but I have embraced my womanhood so as I see myself as the minister God intends me to be.”

Doka said she fully embraced her womanhood in everything she did, including music.

“I think a lot is being done to help women to stand in music and we have women who are confidently stepping out and excelling, but I still consider more can be done to support women,” she said.

The Unchanging God singer said the purpose of her compositions was to serve God and give the best in her ministry of worship.

“I am likely to release an album titled the Faith Project next year. As the title suggests, it will be a music project that is centred on the message of faith in Jesus Christ,” she said.

“All the songs that I will release are designed to point people to God and to minister different takes on the subject of faith.

“Something I believe is much needed for a time such as in this COVID-19 pandemic.”

She added: “Looking at the world over, all the calamities and hardships show us that, indeed, we need God to pull through each and everyday we must walk by faith and not by sight.”

Doka is currently riding high with her latest single called Gore Remakomborero, a song of declaration of faith.
