POLICE in Mashonaland East province have arrested a second suspect over the illegal possession of a cobra following the arrest of Mutare self-styled prophet, Maxwell Muguta, at the weekend.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said Omega Chikanya of Marondera, was arrested for receiving a US$50 bribe to conceal the matter after he saw Muguta buying the venomous snake from a traditional healer in the Seke communal area.

Both face charges of violating the Parks and Wildlife Act.

“I confirm that a Marondera man, Omega Chikanya was arrested alongside the prophet, he is an accomplice in the matter,” Mwanza said.

According to police sources, the prophet travelled to Seke to procure the reptile in a bid to “dupe” a Mutare family that had enlisted his services.
