Schools education inspectors in Chimanimani and Chipinge have been encouraged to equip themselves with knowledge of dealing with natural disasters in the future.
This was said last week by district schools inspector, Richard Gabaza during a three-day workshop held at Birchenough Bridge to equip Chimanimani and Chipinge residents on how to use technology in hazard mapping and mainstreaming disaster risk reduction (DRR).
The workshop was supported by Pre – educate, which is a US$1 million project funded by the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, in partnership with Terre des Hommes Italia in Zimbabwe (TDH), the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), Childline Zimbabwe, Translate into Meaning (TRIM), and the ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
“Our two districts have been affected through losing manpower, and there is need to be capacitated on how to manage such disasters in the future,” Gabaza said.
Chimanimani and Chipinge districts were hit by Cyclone Idai in 2019, resulting in loss of lives and homes.
Participants were also trained on how to use digital mapping tools such as 3 Map, which is a data collection, management and visualisation tool.
It is integrated with existing early warning hazard or risk information in the form of risk maps, sketches, numerical weather prediction models or remote sensing data.

The project has successfully managed to rehabilitate and reconstruct classroom blocks affected by Cyclone Idai, latrines, as well as to provide PPEs for students.
It aims to empower 40 schools in the Chimanimani and Chipinge districts on disaster preparedness through the formal education system.
