RISING Zimbabwean professional golfer Robson Chinhoi took a three shot lead in the Zimbabwe Challenge Golf and Under-par Tour tourney after carding an opening round three under par 69 at Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday.

Chinhoi will start three shots ahead of the duo of Nyasha Muyambo and Mohammad Mandhu, who carded identical scores of level par round of 72.

Pre-tournament favourite Ryan Cairns, who won the last tournament two weeks ago, shot a two-over par round of 74.

He is in a three-way tie for fourth position on the leader board with Never Milazi and Tafara Mpofu.

The spotlight after the opening round was, however, on Chinhoi, who has been enjoying a successful year both at home and outside the country.

Chinhoi is fresh from a successful stint in east Africa, where he bagged three wins on the Safari Tour in Kenya and Uganda in addition to getting the exposure of playing in two European Tour co-sanctioned events in Kenya.

The 30-year-old Mutare-bred golfer said he was pleased with his performance although he felt he could have done better after initially getting off to a slow start.

“I started slowly, but I managed to finish strongly and I’m happy with my score today. I could have done better, but I struggled a bit to get into my rhythm, but i had a good come back on my back nine,” Chinhoi said.

A strong field comprising some of the county’s leading professional golfers is taking part in the tournament, which is being organised by the Zimbabwe Challenge Golf Tour made up from professionals from Royal Harare Golf Club and the Under-par Tour, which is run by the Chapman-based well-respected golf administrator Themba Sibanda.

The prize money is drawn from the entry fees, while there is also a bonus for the players who finish the tournament with an unde-par score.
