BULAWAYO-BASED choreographer Alexander Mhlanga is set to embark on a dance project dubbed 9Lives that provides a platform for the girl child to share survival tactics during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mhlanga, who operates Alexander Dance Lab, told NewsDay Life & Style that the daily struggles faced by the girl child motivated him to come up with the project.
“This initiative, to be done at the end of this month to June, is for women as I provide a platform for them to share with us their daily struggles during the pandemic. I was inspired by women who wish to have power to love the world and do great things,” he said.
“There is a silent fight where a woman or girl child is going through and struggling to make ends meet. Some resort to bad ways in order to survive, others become vendors and domestic workers to feed the families. Some challenges like sexual exploitation by those making it in life may occur.”
Mhlanga said as part of the project, documentaries and dance productions would be produced for women to share their stories that would be in three categories.
“In all the economic hardships, women suffer most and the moment they get up to make ends meet they are faced with different kinds of hardships ,sexual harassment, exploitation at work and some suffer emotional abuses,” he said.
“So, we will be dancing and women will share their stories of the struggles that they turned into triumph through different kinds of dance — like mixed contemporary and traditional dances that will be choreographed in the storyline.”
