Four local arts groups supported by USAid have embarked on a project to use theatre to fight poaching in the country.

Savanna Trust, Twist Theatre Projects, Shangano Arts Trust and Intembawuzyo  will stage performances in local communities while initiating dialogue on how to combat poaching.

Savanna Trust director Daniel Maposa told NewsDay Life & Style that the campaign aims to combat wildlife crime through collaboration with communities living near Hwange National Park and Chizarira in Binga where poaching is rife.

“The increase in poaching and other wildlife crimes inspired the design of the project where we are using theatre to engage local communities around Hwange National Park and Binga to raise awareness and dialogue on wildlife crimes,” he said.

“We started with training Shangano Arts Trust and Intembawuzyo using theatre to communicate wildlife crime messages.

“In the next two weeks, we will perform in 12 local communities stimulating dialogue on how communities can be active participants in combating poaching and other wildlife crimes.”

Maposa said the theatre performances would be followed by dialogue discussions and solution mapping with communities.
