AT least 30 children living with disabilities are not attending school in Hurungwe district since the beginning of this term following a long COVID-19-induced break, NewsDay has learnt.

This came out recently during a meeting organised by the Spotlight Initiative in Hurungwe, which was attended by religious leaders, community-based organisations and community members.

‘‘We are working on modalities to track the 30 children living with disabilities so that they get their chance to be back at school,’’ Spotlight Initiative focal person Miriam Kagoro said.

The Spotlight Initiative is supported by the European Union.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation regional office for southern Africa head unit for social and human sciences, Phinith Chanthalangsy, urged communities in Hurungwe and church leaders to identify the children so that they can go back to school.

“Society must include everyone even if they are disabled. It’s our duty to take them on board,’’ he said.

Deaf Women executive director Agnes Chindimba said disability should be mainstreamed in all government programmes.

“Of late, some community leaders had negative views of women with disabilities. For example, they didn’t realise that disabled women have sexual feelings. Our community dialogues are helping out,’’ she said.
