LOCAL and Norway-registered arts organisation, Simba Arts says it has rebranded the annual Me! Fest and the Bergen Afro Arts Festival (BAAF) to be bi-monthly events under the banner Unlimited Xpreshenz (UnX).

Simba Arts co-founder Simbarashe Fulukia told NewsDay Life & Style that this year they embarked on a number of projects for the continuous upliftment of mostly marginalised women and young people through dance and music.

“We are rebranding the Me!Fest which we hosted in Zimbabwe in May and BAAF that took place here in Norway in September to UnX. It is going to be a bi-monthly family event to be hosted both in Zimbabwe and Norway,” he said.

“UnX is not just going to be a meeting platform, but people will get to share their experiences and challenges in the arts industry. It will be a cultural exchange event.”

He said their programmes were aimed at promoting the creative industry.

“Our theme this year is Increasing Visibility. Since the beginning of the year we have embarked on several programmes that include building an audio and visual studio called Tendaiishe Studio Home in Hatcliff,” he said.

“We are currently renovating our grandmother’s house in Mbare into a big venue. This would usher in our new dance company, Danseteater of Mosi Oa Tunya junior company for ages between 18 and 25. The professional company for those aged 26 and above will be based in Victoria Falls.”

Fulukia said they were creating a space where the dancers can speak in one language.

“We used to do rehearsals at Stodart Hall, Mai Musodzi Hall, Chinembira, Sunningdale and other centres. However, at times we would find these public venues already booked for other purposes. We are, therefore, creating a space where dancers can be uplifted, energised, and inspired,” he said.

“Dance has not been taken seriously as a profession in Zimbabwe and as a way to maintain one’s fitness. So, we want to add value, create and produce world-class dances that can foster community, positive mindsets, vibrant health and well-being.”
