FOUNDER of Drums of Peace (DoP) Lewis Ndlovu says he is making musical drums from recycled paper.

Ndlovu told NewsDay Life & Style that although the drums made from recycled paper maintain the usual design, the shell was made from paper mash and the skin comprises old X-ray plastics.

“I am working on a new idea of making drums that came in 2013, during the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) time when Zimbabwe and Zambia hosted the world summit.

“This is to encourage recycling and a mould has been made for small drums and there will be a need for different moulds to be built for different sizes of drums,” he said.

“Instead of using the animal skin, as we normally use cow and goat skins, we will be using old X-ray plastic.

“I feel it’s time we should be very conscious about the environment, especially during this era of climate change and all.”

“After making the drums, the sound of a drum is the same.  It will depend on the pitch that one desires.

“So basically, the sound will be the same and, on these ones, it will be a little crystal because of the X-ray plastic skin,” he said.

“This is a lifetime drum and very strong. There is too much cry on the environmental issue and climate change as a lot of cutting of trees contributes to this immensely.

“So, one day it will affect us who make drums as there won’t be trees, so let’s preserve these trees, including the environment surrounding us.”

Ndlovu said through this project, he was not discarding of the old way of making drums.

“There are some people who will still have the appreciation of the old original drum, but slowly and surely this idea may take over,” he said.
