MATABELELAND South police have launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly fatally assaulted his employer’s 10-year-old son after the minor told their neighbour that he was physically abusing him and his nine-year-old sibling.
Bekani Bekithemba Dube (32), who was employed by the boy’s father as a herdman in Silozi village under Chief Masuku in Matobo, reportedly kicked the minor and assaulted him with a stick and open hands on February 22, leading to his death.
Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident.
“Dube was left in the custody (sic) of a family’s homestead and the two siblings. He initially assaulted the boy for coming home late from church,” Mangena said. She said Dube left the children and went to drink beer at Silozi Business Centre after the assault.
“The boy’s sibling, who witnessed the assault, reported the matter to their neighbour Sibongile Ndlovu (55). When Dube came back at around 8pm, he assaulted the boy for reporting him to the neighbour,” Mangena said.
Mangena said Dube ran away from the scene after realising that he had killed the minor.
