Four non-governmental organisations including Mutemwa Leprosy Centre and Jairos Jiri Association are set to embark on farming projects after Seed Co donated seed and maize meal to promote food security for less-privileged communities.

Speaking during the handover ceremony yesterday, Seed Co spokesperson Majorie Mutemererwa said feeding schemes were the seed producer’s top priority.

“We have health-oriented programmes where we assist orphans, widows and hospitals. We are also helping invited institutions under the banner of health and wellness,” Mutemererwa said.

Mutemwa Leprosy Centre, Mother of Peace, Mashambanzou Care Trust and Jairos Jiri each received 50kg maize seed which is expected to cover up to two hectares and 500kg of maize meal.

Mutemererwa added that the mealie-meal was a gift which sought to make the festive season bearable for the less-privileged.

“The mealie-meal is an early Christmas present which we hope will assist you through the festive season into the new year. Mealie-meal is an integral part of every Zimbabwean’s daily life and therefore we thought it wise to give it out,” he said.

Mashambanzou Care Trust monitoring and evaluation officer, Casper Hera said: “The support we got from Seed Co has allowed us to be self-sufficient as we never had to buy mealie-meal.

As an organisation which cares for people living with HIV, this was a huge milestone for us. This year we are hoping to make another bumper harvest which will see us through 2020.”

Mother of Peace matron Marge Chigwanda said the project had inspired some of the children to venture into farming to improve their lives.
