UNITED KINGDOM-BASED Zimbabwean hip-hop musician Tinashe “Karizma” Sahanga has embarked on a national tour to help broaden his fan base.

Karizma said staying in the diaspora has affected his career as it has distanced him from fans back home.

The hip-hop musician who has not released any material in a while told NewsDay Life & Style yesterday that he felt the tour was a step forward in his career.

“The tour is like a graduation of sorts for me into the more live performance scenes with a full band, which is something I have never done till now. People take live musicians a bit more seriously and I want people to take what I do and what I bring to Zim hip-hop seriously,” he said.

The artiste, who fused his genre with Afro-jazz in his last album Fakazi, is set to headline shows in Harare at Pablos, ZB Bank Sports Club and Glendale, among others.

Karizma said he was ready to market his music in the country through live shows because they raise music to another level.

“My agenda is to promote my music, especially the Fakazi album I released in November last year. Now that I am active again, this live tour is a perfect opportunity. I now prefer live performances because they have a way of making all my music from my different projects gel together with the live sound,” he said.

Karizma, who is studying in the UK, said he was looking forward to working with Bryan K, Adrian Tate, Asaph, Mzoe7, Myke Pimp, Simba Tags, Junior Brown, Chita, Guluva 7 and Boi Mac.

The 35-year-old musician, whose tour is being sponsored by KYN Records, hopes to perform in intimate set-ups.

“We are starting off small this December with a series of gigs and a few pop-ups at house party type set-ups because I want to perform in intimate set-ups while we get more acquainted,” he said.

In 2007, the musician was the first Zimbabwean artiste to strike a deal with MTV to have his songs used as soundtracks in the cable television channel’s popular television series Shuga.
