7 HIT students face disciplinary action

SEVEN Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) students have been summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee to answer to charges of disorderly conduct after they allegedly disrupted lectures during a campus demonstration on November 12 and 14.

SEVEN Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) students have been summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee to answer to charges of disorderly conduct after they allegedly disrupted lectures during a campus demonstration on November 12 and 14.

According to a charge sheet prepared by authorities at HIT, the seven students engaged in disorderly conduct by singing, dancing, chanting slogans and marching from the hostels area to the library disrupting the teaching, study and research at the institution.

Leeroy Barnete, who is the HIT’s Student Representative Council president, Tafara Mutembedza, Ashlee Makaya, Anesu Chigumadzi, Saviour Machuwaire, Marvin Madamba and Blessing Kalisi will appear before the student disciplinary committee on December 16 this year after a false start to their hearing on Tuesday.

HIT said, “The respondents are all students at HIT and are subject to HIT Act Chapter 25:26 and the Rules of Students Conduct and Discipline Ordinance 16. On Tuesday November 12, 2019 at around 9am, the respondents acting in common purpose, marched from the direction of the hostels area towards the library singing.

“Around the same time, the respondents were seen beating drums, singing and chanting slogans at the entrance of the library and the administration block,”read part of the charge sheet.
