Top Zanu PF and MDC officials are set to clash in Wedza North today ahead of a council by-election to be held on Saturday.

Zanu PF is hosting a rally at Gotora Primary School in ward 4 which is expected to be addressed by the ruling party’s national political commissar Victor Matemadanda, among other top officials, mainly from Mashonaland East province.

On the other hand, the opposition MDC is also sending its top officials who are reportedly going to meet local leadership before conducting door-to-door campaigns.

The council seat fell vacant following the death of Samson Makamba a few months ago. Zanu PF is fielding Shorai Manjeya while the MDC banks its hopes on 31-year-old Vincent Taderera.

In a move meant to garner support, Zanu PF youth from different constituencies in the province will today hold a sports gala before the rally later in the day.

Zanu PF provincial secretary for administration Kudzai Majuru said the party was assured of victory.

“There are youth games at Wedza Growth Point on Thursday (today) and Matemadanda is going to address a rally. We are assured of victory come Saturday election,” he said.

MDC Mashonaland East provincial organising secretary Saizi Vilela confirmed top opposition leaders will be in the area for campaign purposes.
