A MVURWI woman was yesterday convicted of scalding her friend with boiling water after a misunderstanding over gossiping at a party.

Alice Bongomwe (18) of Petra Farm, pleaded guilty to assault charges when she appeared before Guruve magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, who remanded her to today for sentencing.

Prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that on September 27 at around 7am, Bongomwe was approached by her friend Sarudzai Banda (36) at her homestead. Bannda accused her of spreading gossip at a party, which did not go down well with Bongomwe, who picked a tin of boiling water and poured it on Banda. Complainant sustained serious burns and was rushed to Mvurwi Hospital for treatment.

In mitigation, the convict told the court that she felt challenged by her friend who came early in the morning to ask about some gossip, hence she failed to control her temper.

“Your worship, the complainant came in the morning when we were still doing house chores to ask about some gossip, and this irked me. I could not control my temper. But it is my wish that you spare me a jail term because my actions were done out of anger,” Bongomwe pleaded.
