MDC Alliance candidate Vincent Bopoto has started his campaign ahead of the Nyanga Rural District Council ward 26 by-election set for next month.

Bopoto will square off with Bisset Mapeta (Zanu PF) after both candidates successfully filed their nomination papers last weekend.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Elias Mashumba (MDC Alliance) in April.

Soon after the nomination court sat last Saturday, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declared July 13 as the election date.

In an interview with NewsDay on Wednesday, Bopoto said he had since started campaigning.

“I have started my campaign. For a start, I am doing door-to-door campaigns and I am very confident of winning the by-election,” he said

“We want to continue the work that was left by the late councillor Mashumba. We want to honour him by just winning the ward, we want to make him smile.

“I have many developmental projects in the pipeline which I want to introduce if I win the by-election.”

Ward 26 is predominantly in the forestry area, which covers Erin, Selborne and Mutarazi.

The opposition party early this month won the Mutasa Rural District Council ward 10 by-election.
