Police in Murewa have launched a manhunt for a 26-year-old man who allegedly axed his father to death to prevent him from attending a court session at the local magistrates court where he had applied for a protection order against him.

Elliot Reu of Manomano village under Chief Mangwende is on the run after he allegedly struck his father Chamunorwa Makumborenga (82) four times on the head with an axe before fleeing from the scene.

Mashonaland East acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Misheck Denhere confirmed the incident yesterday.

“I confirm the incident in which an octogenarian was allegedly killed by his son in Murewa. The suspect is on the run. We are appealing to anyone who might have information leading to the arrest of the suspect to come forward and alert the nearest police station,” he said.

According to the police, on April 29, at around 5am, Makumborenga was preparing to go to Murewa Magistrates Court where he had applied for a protection order against his son, who he alleged was harassing him.

Reu then attacked his father in his bedroom, striking him four times. He later dumped the axed in front of his mother Varaidzo Makumborenga (70) before fleeing from the scene. Makumborenga was rushed to St Paul’s Musami Hospital where he died while awaiting to be transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.
