A 54-YEAR-OLD Chimanimani primary school teacher has appeared in court for raping a Grade 5 pupil before giving her sachets of jolly juice powder to buy her silence.

The accused, who is represented by Langton Mhungu of Mhungu and Associates, last week appeared before Chipinge magistrate Joshua Nembaware facing two counts of rape.

He was not formally charged and was remanded in custody to February 14.

Investigating officer Constable Simon Simon opposed bail, arguing that the accused was a flight risk.

Simon told the court that on January 29, he received a report that the accused person raped the pupil aged 14 (name withheld to protect her identity) twice on different occasions.

He said medical examinations carried out on the victim showed she had been sexually abused.

Sometime in December, he allegedly instructed the girl to remain behind packing books in the storeroom, while the other pupils went home.

Upon completion of her task, the accused allegedly gave her two sachets of the powder drink and raped her once.

The abusive teacher allegedly muffled her screams with his hands. He then ordered her not to disclose the rape.

On Tuesday last week, using the same method, the court heard he raped the girl for the second time.

However, she went and narrated the ordeal to her grandmother who, in turn, reported to the police, leading to the teacher’s arrest.

She was taken to hospital and a medical examination revealed she had been raped.
