This was heard by Beitbridge magistrate Goodswill Mavenge when Steven Chasaya appeared before him on Friday charged with murder. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to November 11.

The prosecutor, Munyonga Kuvarega, told the court that on October 28 this year, at 10 am, Chasaya (age not given) was at their rented room at Dulivhadzimo suburb in Beitbridge with his wife Ellen Runesu.

The couple was engaged in a heated dispute over an unspecified issue and Chasaya allegedly punched her several times with fists and open hands all over the body.

She died on the spot. Chasaya then covered the body with a blanket and fled from the scene. He was later arrested when he attempted to pick up his belongings from the couple’s rented room.

Runesu’s body was discovered by fellow tenants in a state of decomposition.
