Mnangagwa cornered: Chamisa

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has no choice, but to agree to the formation of a transitional authority if Zimbabwe is to emerge out of the chaos engulfing the country, opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has said.

BY RICHARD CHIDZA

Chamisa reacted angrily to reports that Mnangagwa had effectively ruled out any possibility of talks, let alone the formation of a political structure to superintend the country inclusive of the opposition.

Early this week, Chamisa told journalists that Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF party had reneged on a promise to the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to form an inclusive government following the fall of long-time ruler, former President Robert Mugabe in November last year.

But in his address to the Zanu PF central committee on Thursday, Mnangagwa said there were no plans for a Government of National Unity (GNU).

Chamisa, however, said Mnangagwa had no choice.

“Arrogance and pride come before a fall. Zimbabwe is in a polarised and divided position on account of arrogance as well as exclusive partisan politics,” said Chamisa, who lost to Mnangagwa by a wafer thin margin in the July 30 presidential elections, but insists he was defrauded of victory.

Chamisa said he was not demanding a GNU, but wanted a transitional authority. “Nobody wants a GNU. We have said we want a transitional authority because our nation is in transition. It needs a return to legitimacy and an emergency economic rescue package.

“As far as we are concerned, we do not have a government that has the backing of the people. This (Mnangagwa government) does not have the people’s mandate. It is the product of a contested and illegitimate declaration by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec),” the opposition leader told NewsDay Weekender yesterday.

“I don’t know where Mnangagwa is getting the idea that we want a GNU. We never said we wanted a GNU. It has never been in our thoughts. We have said Zimbabwe needs a transitional authority which is bigger than a GNU.”

Chamisa said while the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) had thrown out his petition and confirmed Mnangagwa as duly elected President, his legitimacy remained in question.

“The ConCourt gave its position, but in politics the court of public opinion reigns supreme. The people are the ultimate arbiters in political issues. They have the ultimate authority.

“The beauty about this is that Mnangagwa has not contested our argument that he did not win the election. He is just arguing that Zec declared him winner, but we have said beyond that declaration, there were issues of legitimacy that he does not have,” the opposition leader said.

Chamisa argued a transitional authority would unite the country and kick-start the economy on the back of international goodwill.

“Mnangagwa must eat humble pie and accept that this country is bigger than him. He must respect the people of Zimbabwe and understand that this country will need all forces and faces to unite in order for it to move forward.

“The economy is always the mirror through which we see the real national situation and you have seen how it is behaving. There is deep seated dislocation, a deficit of leadership, governance, trust and confidence,” he said.

The country has been on an economic tailspin since Finance minister Mthuli Ncube’s announcement of the Transitional Economic Stabilisation Programme, with basic goods disappearing from the shelves while prices continue to sky rocket.

  1. So nelson if you are drafted into the civil service then things will change for the better for ordinary zimbos ,what a sweet dream .first of all come clean on sanctions then maybe only maybe will people take you seriously otherwise all the suffering during this transitional period will be heaped on your door step and for sure you will be forgotten when good times start to roll.

    1. If you do not understand what Chamisa is saying then keep your mouth zip. Where does he say he wants to be part of the civil service so that “things will change for the better for ordinary zimbos”? Chamisa is talking of ED’s lake of LEGITIMACY resulting from rigged elections. He points out that the nation is split in the middle and is advocating for a transitional authority which would unite the people and revive our messed-up economy on the back of international good-will. Whats wrong with that?

      1. transitional arrangement is tantamount with involving oneself in the civil service pot for the slowly dwindling politician, like it or contest it thats how it is.

    2. when will good times start to roll when after 12months nothing to show .tell us what he has achieved during the 12months that u are proud of

    3. True you are very right this Chamisa guy is a problem ,ED invited him a long time ago and he refused now he wants to talk what utter rabbish , we dont need a transitional or GNU -ALL we need is for sanctions to be lifted , Chamisa always talks about people -which people is he referring too ,its him who does not have the people

    4. Elisha yauna brain sanction api fungao kuti mari ngani dzakabiwa ne vanhu ava uye how do thy mis use public funds zvema sanction iva kure uko vanhu avo imbavha ndiyani asina kuba kusanganisa newe dont talk about sanction shame on you

      1. i do not know what you are talking about but the young politicians knows that he is part of the problem of the current turbulence in the economy and it is his last trump card of trying to gatecrash into state house in case you are forgetting only early this year 3 musketeers flew to the usa to advise foreigners to punish zimbos until they accept their leadership but good thing is the majority of zimbos rejected this at the ballot boxes now the talk of transitional authority or whatever…

  2. Cheap talk!
Zimbabwe is not a banana republic and the constitution cannot be altered to serve personal interests.
    Desperation at its highest.

  3. Can anyone tell Zimbabweans what ED has changed since he became president and has positively changed the life of each and every Zimbabwean, inside or outside Zimbabwe.

  4. Comment…Kusaziva kufa iye nhena hadzivaki.
    1. Do MDC supporters Chamisa included know a transitional authority and how it comes into existence? Is it constitutional under the present circumstances?
    2. Is Chamisa disregarding the rural vote which voted for ED? what exactly did he and his MDC A do to win the rural vote?
    3. Why was Chamisa quiet about this transitional authority (TA) before elections if there we discussions then? Aren’t there new lies??

  9. Azvinandaa Kuretu

For crying in a bucket!!Transitional authority for what and on what basis? Does this young man respect voters? ED was handed a clear and legit 5-year mandate by voters(more than 50%+1 vote) and Nelson must accept this reality and should not get carried away by his childish sand and mud-throwing antics!!

  10. Nhai pastor Chamisa, why did you go to ConCourt if you knew that “the court of public opinion rules supreme?????” If you had won at Concourt right now you would be singing kuti our courts are the best. Kid, you cant have your cake and eat it too, neither can a system be perfect only when it favours you. NO.

  11. Butolezwe Mupfigo

Nelson, you unashamedly grabbed the presidency of your party from Ms Thokozani in broad daylight. Why don’t you demonstrate a modicum of sincerity and honesty by restoring constitutionalism in your own party…reach out to Khupe now with a view to returning what you violently stole from her.

  15. As far as Chamisa is concerned ED is illegitimate and there should be no need to talk to an illegitimate person . Nero ,go and talk to the other 21 presidential losing candidates who you think are legitimate . You have no respect for ED so please leave him alone . If ED is failing , then it gives you the chance to beat him next time so leave him to fail . I am sure you want him to fail . Chamisa please imbomira kuvukura . Urikutinyaudza nekuvukura kwako . Your only chance is to eat humble pie and accept that you were beaten and then ED could may be talk to you . ED can not contest the barking of a dog . You have to be human so that people can take you seriously . For now please give us a break . all you know is repeat the same statements just like the barking if a dog . If you have nothing new to tell us please give us some peace . The way you talk of ED does not suite someone who wants to lead this country . Your team leaves to say bad things because they are looking forward to your downfall . Chamisa , you lost and the only chance for a second attempt is 5 years from now .You know very well that by then the economy will be up and running and renders you a loser in 2023 . This is why you are now fighting to have ED involve you . Manje wanyanga yaona . You have to be on your knees to plead and not the arrogance that you are displaying . IT IS YOU CHAMISA WHO IS IN A CORNER AND NOT ED . ED ARIKUTOFAMBA NENDIMA IWE WAKATI DUKU MUKONA MAKO where ever you are .

  16. Parliament impeached Mugabe. Why not make use of parliment. Mps should consult their people followed by a private vote. The will of the people will win despite the two thirds majority of zanu pf. Even those in zanu pf wants answers from Ed. Its not about mdc or zanu pf. Its about the sick with no madice, the worker with salaries not buying. We want to move foward as a country even if it requires bibilical Jona to be thrown in water to save the ship. God will have a plan for Jona than the whole ship.

  17. Chamisa can do whatever he wants in opposition but is not allowed by law to disturb those who have just got the mandate to govern. Sometime in November, the cabinet was sworn in and that is when government starts business full time. It has recently though, emerged that the system needs thorouh clensing before it’s business as usual. I am happy that Ed is up to the task by finalising on the comission that is already working on the Rbz sagga. Reversing the barn on imports of food and other essential goods is one clever move the government has taken. It does no good to protect the industry which takes the advantage of the protection given to it to use its monopoly to prop up opposition politics. Ed must carry on with economic reforms whic will eventualy liberalise the economy to make sure there are no monopolies that would be exploited by greedy dealers and those who want to subotage the government for political expediency.

  18. CHAMISA CHAMISA CHAMISA usatitsamwise wazvinzwa. wanzwa here? iwe Chamisa, Biti nemujournalist wandakanganwa zita rake and a Rhodesian white guy. 19. if MDC was in power how would it improve the lives of the people ?
how would they reduce the civil servants bill without firing some ?
how would they raise mari into government coffers without raising taxes ?
how would they balance the books

People are complaining about the 2% tax really, it could have been more and I bet if MDC had been in power they would have done the same

People will loose their jobs, taxes will be raised that is how a foundation of setting up a new Zimbabwe will be built.

Anythng else is an illusion and that is exactly what Mdc would be doing if they were in power. As of now you can expect this Munangagwa guy to have changed the whole country in a year even tuckshop takes longer than that.
Zimbabweans get used to hardship for it will last a bit longer regardless of who is in power, even if you have a transitional government

  20. Transitional authority – transition to what, MDC rule? ZANU PF chiororo hapana hapana guys. You lost elections and that is it. No back door entry into government

  23. I am absolutely fed up with Chamisa. This idiot is the one cornered. He is just trying to save face and his gullible supporters believe him. Let him carry on dreaming while everyone moves on. He just keeps on talking to remain relevant. Of course, he had to say something at the so-called celebrations. His stupid followers believe him. I never realised people could be so stupid.

  24. Say whatever you want but te truth is known that E.D is the President of Zimbabwe.Today kana mwana wako akabvunzwa muExam kuti President weZimbabwe ndiani akanyora Chamisa wenyu iyeye anofoira kkkk.Saka hapana zvamuri kutaura apa.Taurai nyaya kwadzo.Zvoroto zviroto.Zvekuti zvinhu zvakanyangara ndeimwe nyaya.Kana iri yekuti anotonga Zimbabwe ndiani ndeimwe nyaya.Musasanganise nyaya.kkk

  25. This thing is stupid together with its supporters. You can’t say everything is wrong unless it favours you, bull…

  26. you are just insulting CHAMISA because you are talking from an empty stomach.mnangagwa is just as clueless as a man talking with no food to eat (an angry man).you will agree on that transition or else you suffer for the rest of your lives

    1. Personally, I am not talking from an empty stomach because God has blessed me. But this stupid clown, called Chamisa is talking the country down and he is affecting the confidence of investors. Tell me you blind supporters of Chamisa, do you realise that his talk is just damaging the country. You are the ones talking from empty stomachs. I live outside Zimbabwe and even people from other countries no longer understand Chamisa’s motives.

  27. Didn’t know this forum is still infested with Zanu PF apologists.

  28. Why only him? What about other 22 candidates?. This boy is insane to say the least. We dont like Mnangagwa but that doesn’t mean we like chamisa either. The president must go through the countrys legal route, not power grabing mdc style.
