A LOCAL firm, Liquid Telecom, has joined hands with the Ministry of Health and Child Care and City of Harare in a $1,5 million water and sewer infrastructure refurbishment project in the suburb of Glen Norah.

Harare mayor Herbert Gomba, who is also councillor for Ward 27 in the area, applauded the company’s efforts in an address to dignitaries at the ground breaking ceremony yesterday.
“Liquid Telecom is an all-weather partner and the way they have reacted to assist the city in the wake of the cholera outbreak is very touching. Such corporate responsibility drive is commendable, and I wish to take this time and moment to convey our heartfelt thanks to the company,” he said.
Harare’s aged and dilapidated water reticulation system has been blamed for intermittent waterborne disease outbreaks such as cholera, which claimed over 50 lives a few weeks ago.
Liquid Telecom Southern Africa chief operation officer, Martin Mushambadope, said his company has decided that the root problem of Harare’s water and sewer woes needed to be tackled.
“The trenching that we are witnessing today is Liquid Telecom repairing and revamping broken sewer pipes and water reticulation infrastructure. Such interventions are directed at attending to the problem and not the symptoms,” he said.
The project’s first phase will cover Chembira School, Glen Norah Park and, move through to Shiriyedenga, which will also cover Dzivaresekwa and Chazesesa. Areas like Tafara will also benefit in the next phase, Liquid Telecom officials said.
