The 39-year-old man from Male village, Dombodema, in Plumtree, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Adeline Mbeure on Monday facing rape charges and was remanded in custody to October 9.

The court heard that on June 30, the juvenile, who is in Grade 7, together with her nephew, were sent by her grandfather to collect meat from her uncle.

The court was told that when the two arrived at the uncle’s homestead, he asked the nephew to go and fetch water for him with a scotch cart at a borehole.

The uncle then invited the juvenile into his bedroom under the pretext that he wanted to show her something.

He then raped her and told her not to divulge the incident to anyone.

The court heard that matter came to light when the juvenile started complaining of abdominal pains and her aunt became suspicious.

She then revealed that she had been raped.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to the uncle’s arrest.
