Odzi man caged over post-election violence

An Odzi man has been slapped with a six-month jail term for striking a Zanu PF supporter’s kitchen door while denouncing the ruling party soon after the July 30 elections.

Julius Gowa appeared before Mutare magistrate Tendai Mahwe on Friday who suspended two months on condition of good behaviour.

According to prosecutor Brighton Shamuyarira, on August 3, 2018 at around 0200hours at Plot 7 Orasi Farm, Nyagundi Resettlement, Odzi, Gowa approached the complainant, Nobert Moses’ homestead shouting “ED Pfee, ED Pfee”, a slogan used by Zanu PF supporters in the July 30 election to mobilise votes for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

After confirming that Moses was sleeping in the kitchen, he struck the door four times, shouting that he was going to deal with all Zanu PF supporters in Odzi.

The damaged door was valued at $25.

Mahwe said Gowa had breached the Electoral Act and that the custodial sentence was to deter acts of political violence which he said were on the rise.
