Four people died on the spot, while another passenger and the driver, Watson Sabawa (35) died upon arrival at Gejo RaRuby Clinic and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals respectively.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident and said four of the deceased have since been identified.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) continues to urge motorists to check roadworthiness of vehicles and tyres before embarking on journeys. Also motorists should avoid speeding,” she said.
The other three passengers who died in the accident are Elijah Chibanda (63) of Mutoko, Nancy Gwenyere (65) of Murewa and Cloudy Mudoni (30) of Murewa.
The injured were treated at Gejo RaRuby Clinic and discharged.
According to police, on Sunday at around midday, the commuter omnibus was heading towards Nyamapanda with 18 passengers on board. On approaching the 34km peg, near Juru growth point, the vehicle’s rear left tyre burst resulting in the driver losing control.
It is reported that the vehicle veered off the road, overturned several times before landing on its left side.
The stretch near Gejo RaRuby Farm has become a black spot. Few years ago, close to 30 people died after two buses side-swiped.
