REDCLIFF municipality might soon have its water supplies cut after its debt to Kwekwe City Council ballooned to $6 million.

The development comes shortly after Kwekwe reportedly closed taps and later resumed water supplies to its neighbour on humanitarian grounds over the long-standing debt.
“We are failing to pay our bill to Kwekwe City Council which has gone up to $6 million in three years, mainly because our revenues are low. Council has failed to service its debt, forcing Kwekwe to act on us,” council’s former finance committee chairperson Clayton Masiyatsva said.
Redcliff which has no water supply of its own and collectively owes Kwekwe over $15 million, according to Masiyatsva. The other part of the obligation was shelved because it was a legacy debt owed to Kwekwe by Ziscosteel.
Former Kwekwe mayor Matenda Madzoke, who lost the re-election bid, confirmed the debt, but denied closing the taps.
“Our pumps were down and because we have no money to repair them owing to the huge debt, we can’t repair them. We have asked the local authority to pay some money towards repairs but they don’t have the money so what can we do,” he said.
