Learnmore Chikunguwo was arrested in Wedza after fleeing from the scene following the murder of his uncle, Edward Chikunguwo (53) and his wife Chiratidzo.

Mashonaland East police confirmed the tragic incidents.

“A suspected mental patient was arrested after he allegedly killed his uncle and aunt. We urge those who are in custody of mental patients to make sure they take their medication to avoid such incidents,” acting provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza said.

According to police, Chikunguwo and his wife visited the suspect at his homestead where he turned violent and charged towards them wielding an ox yoke.

He allegedly struck both of them repeatedly until they died.

The accused then fled the scene, stole a bicycle at the nearby Maware business centre and rode towards Save River Bridge where he eventually boarded a commuter omnibus to Wedza.

Along the way, the accused allegedly threatened to stab a passenger Tapiwa Murwira, leading to his arrest.

The deceased’ bodies were taken to Chivhu Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
