Teachers dig in on strike action

TEACHERS Unions yesterday vowed to disregard the threat by government on their intended strike, claiming no amount of bullying will force them to cower unless their employer agrees to engage and discuss their grievances.

Last month, teachers resolved to down tools when schools open for second term next week saying the government must meet their demands first.

However, the minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Monitoring Implementation and Government Programmes Simbarashe Mumbengegwi said the government had never refused to engage the workers and has met the APEX council for the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) to talk about the welfare of civil servants.

“Government is therefore calling upon all teachers not to participate in this unlawful and highly premature strike action called for by some of the union leaders who may not have the same agenda of improving conditions of service for teachers,” Mumbengegwi said.

However the unions said they wanted to negotiate issues specifically from their sector and not through the APEX council.

Progressive Teacher’s Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) leader Raymond Majongwe said intimidation will not work and they will go ahead with their planned strike.

“It is unfortunate for a man (Mumbengegwi) who we thought has learnt a lot through mistakes under the Mugabe regime. If they think they will intimidate us then that will hit a brick wall,” Majongwe said.

“All what we are asking for is dialogue with government. They cannot impose a leadership on us which is also discredited. The teachers are saying we want to discuss with government our sector related issues.

“As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed on the strike unless if they engages us. Without that we are going ahead with the strike because our issues are sector related. We are not intimidated. It is quite clear that the government wants to negotiate with people who are not teachers and the APEX council cannot represent us.”

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) boss Obert Masaraure urged “all teachers to remain vigilant and not be cowed down by the cowardly and desperate attempts to scuttle a legitimate job action.”

“We will soon be sharing a clear logistics plan for implementing the strike,” he said.

teachers must view this at individual or personal level. while their issues need be addressed urgently.. but when it comes to dismissal it will have an impact at individual levels. IWE NDIWE UNODZINGWA BASA VANA WAKO WOSUFFER AND JOURNALISTS WILL CONTINUE COVERING YOUR STORIES BUT WHAT DO U GAIN FROM PUBLICITY WHEN YOU NO LONGER HAVE MONEY TO PAY RENTALS… ASK NURSES WHO WERE DISMISSED SOME ARE NOW BEGGING TO BE RE ADMITTED . HAUDYE PUBLICITY BECAUSE RENT AND SCHOOL FEES HADZIBHADHARWE NE NEWSPAPER HEADLINE or NE THOSE WHO POST COMMENTS ENCOURAGING YOU TO GO ON STRIKE WHEN THEY ARE ALSO UNDERPAID AT THEIR RESPECTIVE WORK PLACES AND SOME HAVE GONE FOR MONTHS WITHOUT PAY BUT THEY ARE NOT STRIKING..

    1. AAAHHH SO PEOPLE SUFFER BECAUSE OF FEAR TO BE VICTIMISED STRIKE ACTION IS A DEMOCRATIC RIGHT OF EVERY EMPLOYEE. IF OUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS HAD ADOPTED THAT LINE OF THINKING DOMBORAMWARI NO ONE WA GOING TO FIGHT FOR OUR LIBERATION BECAUSE THEY WOULD JUST SAY IF YOU DIE IN THE WAR YOUR FAMILY WILL SUFFER ALONE. MESSAGE HAS TO BE SEND TO OUR LEADERS THAT THINGS ARE NOT WELL IN THIS SECTOR. TEACHERS TRIED ALL FORMS OF COMMUNICATION CHANNELS TO ENGAGE THOSE IN POWER BUT IT SEEMS NOTHING IS MATERIALISING.

  2. there must also be prepared to reapply as the axe will definitely fall on those who decide to join this ill advised action

  3. Teachers don’t be fooled by Raymond Majongwe etal he seized teaching in the early 90s he is now a carrier trade unionist politician and stunt man.His political CV grows with your dismissal.

  7. One can distinguish cowards from the brave easily from the comments section.
Whoever died or failed to look after their dependants because of being fired or out of a job? I’ve experienced both but it didn’t break my spirit. Collective job action is legal as long as procedures for doing so are followed, including giving the employer two weeks’ notice. Cowardice has reduced Zimbabwe to the state it is in now. People with careers and qualifications have to stand up for their rights.

Negotiations with the employer are encouraged to reach a true position of the best which can be,but what can well be bad is selfish imposition by only section of society(in this case the teachers) on the expense of the other sections, where gvt will end up resorting to increasing taxes on all the tax payers or every body else in order to meet the demands of powerful groups like teachers, while the same gvt is unable to pay a poor rural farmer adequate price for their own goods, after instituted laws forbidding the same farmer to sell to n one else at a market price;for reasons that the same teacher get cheaper food on the market, must leave for greener pastures til economy picks

Sensible strike by n one must b directed against gvt corruption-overpaying executives&, in entertainment & other unacceptable allowances, buying posh cars for themselves & traditional chiefs, engaging in unnecessary foreign trips or foreign missions who would stay in expensive hotels there;I think all people would get into the streets, including teachers, vendors, doctors, nurses, farmers etc guided on specific unallowable gvt expenditures;demanding transparency,I think this must b the only strike which must b on the show by concerned citizens;n other complains to b channeled thru properly, failure of which general strike shld b called by all against insensitive gvt-not selfish one for a group

  10. if fear was allowed to go control humans i think we would still be under a white minority regime tichingonzi “unofa vana vako vagosara vachitambura”. “look at it at indivuidual level”. These are zanu pple sent here to try to instill fear in pple’s hearts the selous scouts way.
