Although police in Matabeleland North could not be reached for comment, the School Development Council chairperson (SDC), Sidalubuhle Moyo, confirmed the incident yesterday, saying 15 students lost various items during the break-in.

“Police are still carrying out investigations and they are at the school. We have not informed their parents as yet. I will be able to comment fully when we have communicated formally with their parents,” he said.

However, according to a school teacher, Upper Six students lost three laptops while those in Form Three and Four lost school shoes and satchels with books. “They were personal gadgets, but prior to that disappearance, a security guard on Friday evening went to their hostels and found cellphones under their pillows and he took them to the school head,” the teacher said

“Phones are prohibited at the school, so they were called for questioning, but it seems it’s the same parents that give them. The following day, they came to report that they had lost their laptops. Police have been called to come and do a thorough search at the hostels because we suspect that there is foul play. As I speak, Lupane district police officers are here and all the students have been advised to exit the hostels to pave way for the search.

“What puzzles us as teachers is that the same day, some junior pupils lost their school shoes and bags with books and that prompts us to think that maybe it was an outsider who sneaked in using an ungazzeted entry point.”
