Tinashe Ronald Chigiya (26), who was rescued by a Zambezi House bartender on Friday, had had a few drinks with his friends before diving into the mighty Zambezi River, claiming he was being driven by his late brother’s spirits.

“None of us took him seriously as we suspected that he had taken one too many,” a witness said.

“The drama started around 10pm when he threatened to commit suicide, and at around 1am, after we had all forgotten about it, he just jumped off the secured place and plunged into the river. Luckily, the bartender was nearby and he immediately jumped to save him while risking his.”

“He was palpitating and could not talk, but he is safe now. He still mentions that his late brother is calling him,” another reveller, who declined to be named, said.

Victoria Falls police Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona confirmed the incident, saying Chigiya was stabilised at a local hospital and discharged the following day.

The incident came shortly after a drunk 21-year-old Zambian tourist was attacked by a crocodile after diving into a crocodile-infested pool in the tourist resort town.

Collin Miller lost his arm following the attack and is reportedly in a stable condition at an undisclosed South African health institution.
