EIGHT more Chitungwiza councillors including deputy mayor Goodwill Mushangwe (MDC-T) resumed their duties on Thursday last week after they were cleared of corruption charges levelled against them.

However, suspended mayor, Phillip Mutoti and three other councillors are yet to be cleared by the tribunal tasked to investigate the town’s 24 councillors following their suspension last year.
The other suspended councillors yet to receive their judgments are Charamba Mlambo, Lameck Chibvongodze and Kalisto Masango.
One of the councillors’ lawyers, Marufu Mandevere confirmed the development yesterday, saying Mushangwe, Richard Chamutsa, Musa Makweza, Goodwill Mushangwe, Maria Majoni, Fungai Chirwa had their suspensions lifted last week.
Mushangwe said 21 out of a possible 25 councillors were back in office.
“We now have me, Tendai Saimon, Tichaona Muchakwa, Musekiwa Ruzvidzo, Wilfred Gwekwete, Phanuel Katewa, Betty Jaison (Dokora), Mavis Mazenge, Richard Chamutsa, Maria Majoni, Fungai Chirwa, Nicholas Mashayamombe, Musa Makweza, Darlington Musonza, Shuddy Mapuranga, Amon Muranda, Rudo Dzere, Chido Mangoma, Francis Marambakutongwa, and Simbiso Mhike as well as Beula Jena, who was not suspended.
The move all but sealed the fate of the three-member Madzudzo Pawadyira-led commission, which residents, through the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZHLR), had taken to court over its continued stay after the expiry of its term of office in August last year.

Former Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere last year suspended 24 councillors, out of the 25 in Chitungwiza on allegations of corruption and appointed a commission to run the town’s affairs. Thirteen of the suspended councillors, including Musekiwa Ruzvidzo, who was later elected acting mayor, resumed work last week after their recent exoneration on corruption charges by a three-member tribunal, headed by Virginia Mudimu.
