Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader Innocent Ndibali yesterday challenged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to use the Independence Day commemorations to reflect on some of the State’s injustices, including forced disappearances of human rights and opposition activists.

In a statement to mark Independence Day, Ndibali said the political massacres, killings and disappearances orchestrated by Zanu PF during former President Robert Mugabe’s reign could not be wished away.

“As an organisation, we are committed to aiding the government in dealing with these dark episodes of our history,” he said, adding that the State should come clear on the whereabouts of activists such as Paul Chizuze, Itai Dzamara, Rashiwe Guzha and Patrick Nabanyama, among others.

Ndibali said independence would be incomplete if citizens continue to be hounded by draconian laws such as Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Aippa) and Public Order and Security Act (Posa) crafted by Mugabe with the intention of stifling people’s freedoms.

He called for the immediate repeal of all unfriendly laws and address of socio-economic challenges such as cash shortages.

“Drastic measures need to be taken such as the review of our monetary and economic policies and the establishment of a multi-stakeholder consultative forum tasked with the duty of conceptualising innovative solutions to the current economic predicaments; a process to which we will avail our expertise,” Ndibali said.

The EFF leader said his party’s mandate was to fight for economic, social and political emancipation of the ordinary Zimbabweans irrespective of their colour, sexual orientation and tribe.

“These cannot be achieved unless a conducive political environment is cultivated, which would make the contestation for political power possible,” he said.

“As we gather to celebrate independence, let’s take time to recognise, especially the post-independence political victims, who did not deserve to die except that they pursued their democratic rights.”
