A 21-YEAR-OLD University of Zimbabwe (UZ) student representative council member, who was arrested during the medical students’ protest against a fee hike last year, yesterday appeared before a provincial magistrate charged with public violence.

Kudakwashe Canaan Guta, through his lawyer Kuzivakwashe Ngodza, denied the charge when he appeared before magistrate Victoria Mashamba.
Guta was arrested together with cleric and #ThisFlag leader Evan Mawarire, who had since been acquitted of the same charges, after the downfall of former President Robert Mugabe.
However, UZ security member Walter Takudzwa Mukunza yesterday told the court that Guta, together with other 150 students, stormed the Students Union building singing and holding placards inscribed, “1% of $15 billion is enough for our fees”.
Mukunza said Guta together with his accomplices, who are still at large, started throwing stones towards them, demanding reversal of tuition fees increase.
Allegations are that on June 26 last year, Guta and his alleged accomplices held an unsanctioned demonstration demanding a reduction in tuition fees.
Guta was later arrested in the ensuing melee.
