MDC wants Grace nabbed over PhD

THE Welshman Ncube-led MDC has called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to dissolve the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and appoint an uncompromised commission with capacity to probe and cause the arrest of former First Lady Grace Mugabe over her PhD saga.

MDC spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi, said ZACC should show impartiality through probing Grace just as they have done with University of Zimbabwe vice-chancellor, Levi Nyagura, who was recently arrested over his role in supervising Grace’s controversial PhD awarded in 2014.

Nyagura faces criminal abuse of office charges over his role in allegedly facilitating Grace’s PhD.

“We are aware that the court heard in 2011 how Nyagura approved Grace’s application without the knowledge and recommendations of the departmental board and faculty of higher degrees committee. That was in violation of UZ quality assurance guidelines and benchmark.

“As MDC, it is our conviction that the real culprit here is Grace Mugabe. We believe she initiated the whole embarrassing academic scandal. In our view Grace is accused number one,” Chihwayi said in a statement at the weekend.

Grace, once a secretary in former President Robert Mugabe’s office, was thrust into the spotlight when it emerged she was graduating with a PhD in Sociology three months after enrolment.

Mugabe has said Grace was being harassed for her PhD.

“Now we learn with great shock that ZACC is wasting taxpayers’ money and resources on an investigation into Grace’s PhD supervisor, Professor Claude Mararike, with a view to check if he possessed the requisite qualifications for the job.

“We feel these developments on the ground point to a ZACC that cannot exhibit fair play and casts doubt on the genuineness of the anti-corruption unit in stamping out corruption. We are demanding the arrest of Grace Mugabe as this will prove to the nation that no one is above the law,” Chihwayi added.

Zacc has been probing former Energy minister Samuel Undenge, former Foreign minister Walter Mzembi, Highfield West legislator Psychology Maziwisa and television personality Oscar Pambuka over corruption allegations.

  1. Handei Tione!

That’s true. Mnangagwa should not show Grace to Mugabe’s wife. There is need for a thorough investigation and indeed no sacred cows should be left untouched. In addition to being investigated for an attempt on Mnangagwa’s life, she has got a case to answer in Mzansi for an attempted murder of her son’s lover. Now, Grace is roaming free, taking advantage of the prevailing goodwill to an extent of pulling strings from behind the scenes, setting up rivals for ED. If she is not dealt with, ED risks losing the election. Nyamunatsi ndiye nyamutsingwa nebonda!

  3. But Mugabe implicated Mnangagwa in the scandal;only lamented his wife’s investigation instead of giving clear evidence in the matter as someone in the know.”we all helped her get the degree in three months time after enrollment”claimed Mugabe. So Ngwena is part of the scandal! Will b fired at the ballot come AUGUST if he does not quickly exonerate himself

  4. Mugabe only lamented his wife’s investigation but failed to shed light on the matter-a clear sign the degree is fraudulent!

  5. Where was the Departmental Board and ZACC since 2014? They made a political decision then to agree with the conferment because it served the interest of those who were in power just like they are making a political decision now to serve the interest of those currently in power.
If anyone is interested in knowing what actually transpired the right thing to do was to call for a commission of inquiry into the awarding of degrees to high profile politicians in Zimbabwe. In do not think it is fare to restrict the inquiry to one person when many politicians were awarded degrees in recent years. The results of the commission of inquiry should be made public. I do not see the role of ZACC and departmental board except explaining why they were quiet allalong.

  6. I was doing grade 4 at Inkomo Barracks in 1979 and there was a popular tease that was directed at girls who wore their dresses shorter than their petticoats where back then they were referred to as having a “PhD”. For a while I did not know what that meant until some smart alec told me it meant Petticoat Hanging Down. I say this in the hope that Grace may have a little real laugh over her not so gracefulness and stolen Phd not those morbid chuckles of hers that predictably followed her equally impecunious and depraved jokes at the expense of the likes of Kaukonde, Charamba, Mujuru and Mnangagwa.
