MDC-T manifesto in limbo

THE opposition MDC-T’s manifesto launch hangs in the balance after a crucial policy indaba was postponed due to lack of interest from key officials, it has been learnt.
BY RICHARD CHIDZA

Party leader, Nelson Chamisa, who before assuming the reins of power in the wake of the death of founding president, Morgan Tsvangirai last month headed the opposition party’s policy division, this week summoned portfolio secretaries for the crucial gathering, but only a handful responded.

“Only a few people, about seven out of over 60 people came for the meeting. It was a flop to such an extent that the meeting had to be moved to a later date that we are yet to be advised,” NewsDay heard.

“The policy indaba was supposed to come up with a draft that will feed into the manifesto for the upcoming elections. That is a very urgent issue the party has to resolve very quickly.”

The meeting, sources said, was supposed to be attended by senior national executive members, as well as all portfolio members in-charge of different departments.

“The national executive members, all portfolio secretaries and other senior leaders, who should attend just inexplicably did not turn up. Something is wrong and the Bulawayo violence could not have come at a worse time for the party,” another source said.

However, MDC-T director of communications and Chamisa’s spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka played down the policy “flop” issue.

“It (policy meeting) will be held next week on March 16. I am not sure about the figures of who is supposed to attend, but it’s a lie to say it flopped.

“This gathering is like your cabinet and surely they cannot be 67 of them. It was just a question of logistical issues that we are sorting out and next week its on,” he said.

Violence broke out in Bulawayo on Sunday, leaving hordes injured, as the internal power struggle in the MDC-T threatened to tip the party over the edge.

Party deputy president, Thokozani Khupe, who continues to claim that she is the constitutional interim leader of the party, once again found herself at the sharp end of the intra-party violence.

Khupe escaped unhurt for the second time inside two months after she was accosted by angry youth at Tsvangirai’s burial and had to seek refuge in a hut.

Chamisa has stuck to his guns and has gone about consolidating his position, including lining up rallies across the country. He has already held one rally in Chinhoyi that has been described as a “success”.

  2. Newsday editors, your reporting here is in shamble and not worth as i view your writings.Don’t late our enemy zanu pf to keep stepping on every zimbabwean heads as i see your above mentioned writing as an aiding weapon. The Herald,Manica Post news papers do keep on supporting zanu pf through thick and thin,so don’t be like them pliz.

    1. Newsday is doing good it is what other papers do which is not good, those papers doing what you have said

    2. The reporters can not stop doing their work simply because things are going badly for MDC, they are there to report things as they are & should not be attacked simply because you do not like what they say.

  3. Let us drop the culture of political fanaticism and follow the law. Months to the general election, the future of the main opposition party remains uncertain. The current tussle is a product of previous negligence on the same and the more turn a deaf ear on it, the more we complicate issues. Why give our competitors a lifeline out of personal interests? We may skirt around the truth but succession tussle is a ticking time bomb in the MDC-T.

  4. 30 pcs of silver have made sure the editor fits into someone’s pocket pefectly well. shame on zim journalism

  5. This is obviously ‘brown envelope’ journalism. Its quite a pitty that you have reduced yourself to this lowest. This definatily can’t be ‘Everyday news for everyday people’…..Shaaame.

    1. Especially when we can read between the lines that they are talking crap. We are not kids Newsday. How can a single meeting that has been postposed affect the manifesto? How many meetings are adjourned by ED? Plenty! Do you report them? This is cheap journalism that you are portraying, as if you have been hijacked by ZANU, or are being payed to squeeze out as much gossip on MDC as possible. Grow up Newsday hatichi chembere dzeZANU dzinopururudza chero dzichiudzwa rubbish. In short, if you mean to address the everyday people with this poor reporting, change your name to AMH Kwayedza.

  6. The truth of the matter is that the mdc-t has no policies to proffer to the country. They ran on the “Mgabe Must Go” mantra for too long and now that someone beat them to retiring the former president, they are just like headless chickens, utterly confused and clueless. ED is the new game in town and no sane Zimbabwean can deny that.

    1. that is your own view but i guess are wrong on this one

    2. hahahahahaah wake up

  7. Chamisa have changed the direction of the MDC with support of few men in National council

  8. Politics is sad and mdc wake up,everyone is consolidating their position while you are busy fighting each other.you are weakening yourselves so that when you get to the battle with ED you will ne mince meat.this is sad

  9. despite all things being said about MDC-T its the only opposition party that can end the era of ZANU PF

    1. Not so sure about that anymore. Violent, uncouth youths, relying on anointment rather than face a congressional vote do not count as positives in my book. We all have different opinions but the facts do not change. An MDC war lord and a Zanu PF war lord are exactly the same animal… Violent Zanu PF youths and violent MDC youths are also the same. The damage done to the MDC brand in the past month alone can undo all its support from 1999, some of us have travelled that full journey and are frankly dismayed but not surprised by the chameleonic characteristics which are exhibiting themselves daily….before our eyes.

  10. Emmanual Mlambo

Rest in Peace…..MDC and Morgan ……you fought a long fight….19 years . You died young…..before you could see much of life. Lala ngoxolo….robala ka kagiso !!!!!!

  11. ZANU PF has changed much and is now a progressive party under Mnangagwa. Unfortunately MDC-T is regressing under Chamisa. To all Zimbabweans, I say “let’s give Mnangagwa a chance in the 2018 polls. Just like the late MDC leader Tsvangirai, Mnangagwa also endured a lot of pain under Mugabe and almost lost his life for challenging Mugabe within ZANU PF. Please don’t judge Mnangagwa by his performance under the Mugabe administration because he was not his own man and he was supposed to implement the policies and directives of his then Master, Mugabe. But now, ED is his own man and we can all see that he has an excellent economic vision for our country”.

  12. Chamisa Will reign all the way…

  13. why must people keep on voting a failed regime? Where are the 2013 2.2 millions promised jobs? Zanus still think that Zimbabweans are doom nee.

  14. Yes you right he will reign all the way to defeat or he should change now bro

    1. Mandiitaweti Mnangagwa

Yes he will reign all the way to the defeat of Mnangagwa

  15. Dont buy Newsday, its mere waste of money. This newspaper is biased.Nxaa

  16. Shame on Newsday. We wont buy that paper

  17. Newsday missing it right at the death of Zanu Pf. Kurambwa nesugar. Chamisa is unstoppable

  18. Chamisa will unseat the old tyrant mnangagwa and we will have a new zimbabwe

  19. Hey spare us the nonsense Newsday. We saw through the Lacoste move into so called independent media months ago. Even ZANU PF has not availed their manifesto as yet. They are still very much in the infancy of that process. Your paymasters are prompting you to pressure the MDC to release their manifesto so you can craft yours in response. Be patient, it will come when the people have had their say.

  20. Newsday marara chaiwo..handichatengi tsvina!

  21. ZANU kumusha makamboita rally inozara vanhu vachiteerea vachinaiwa vasina kumanikidzwa kumusangano here, hokoyoi na Chamisa, bvisai meso kuBulawayo mutaurewo zvekuChinhoyi
