Khupe scoffs at Chamisa ultimatum

MDC-T deputy president, Thokozani Khupe has scoffed at the seven-day ultimatum she was given by the party’s national council last week to acknowledge Nelson Chamisa’s appointment as her boss or risk expulsion from the opposition party.

BY RICHARD CHIDZA

Khupe told NewsDay in an interview yesterday that she would not recognise Chamisa’s “un-procedural” elevation, arguing the MDC-T national council had no mandate to make such key decisions.

“The national council cannot give me an ultimatum. It does not have the power to do that. I can only be given an ultimatum by congress. The national council does not and has no power to elect leaders,” she said.

“I was elected at congress in 2014 along with our late leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. That means, in his absence, I should be acting president. Chamisa and (Elias) Mudzuri were appointed by president Tsvangirai.”

Khupe said she would not have a problem with Chamisa if he had been elected by congress.

“The question is why they are afraid of congress if they believe that they are so popular. We must stick to the values and principles that define the MDC. We are of the belief that our colleagues have deviated from the character and culture that defines the MDC, that of social democracy and non-violence, the values of non-discrimination on ethnic and gender,” she said.

“The so-called national council meetings that are being bandied about were un-procedural and I do not recognise any of their resolutions. Constitutionally I am the acting president of the MDC-T.”

Khupe said she was ready to engage Chamisa “as long as he respects the constitution of the party and we respect each other according to our positions in the party”.
“Violence and anarchy will not win,” she said.

Khupe also told South African broadcaster, SABC that she was preparing to contest the upcoming elections.

“We will work hard and show them we have the people. We will win the elections and we are the true MDC,” she said effectively declaring a split in the party.

The embattled former deputy prime minister has since last year been locked in a vicious succession fight with Chamisa and has allegedly been assaulted three times by youth aligned to the new party leader.

The latest attack was at the MDC-T Bulawayo provincial offices on Sunday, where her aide, Witness Dube, was assaulted alongside 15 other activists during clashes with Chamisa’s alleged allies.

MDC-T acting spokesperson, Tabitha Khumalo yesterday blamed Khupe for Sunday’s skirmishes.

“She is to blame because you cannot go to a province and hold illegal meetings without the knowledge of the elected leadership,” she said.

Asked what would happen to the ultimatum, Khumalo said: “We had sent emissaries to engage them, but given what transpired at the weekend, the national council resolution would have to be implemented. They (Khupe, national chairman, Lovemore Moyo and organising secretary, Abednico Bhebhe) will be suspended pending disciplinary hearing.”

  1. Contrary to what some people here are suggesting that Chamisa might turn out to be another dictator like Mugabe and have went on to portray madam Kupe as a more democratic leader than Chamisa, I would want to refute that and the following are my reason:
    1. When the MDC party resolved to join the alliance Kupe was not for the idea herself. She then forgot that organisational decisions are made by resolutions which are passed in most cases by vote. If the majority of MDC leadership and the general membership through consultations contacted endorsed the direction to join the alliance, then Kupe if she is not a dictator should have put her wishes to rest and supported the party’s decision. The fact that she insisted and is still insisting on wanting to impose her wishes and views which are not in sink with the party’s decision shows her intolerance to divergent views and a dictator she is. If allowed to get close to the reins of power no one will be allowed to oppose her.
    2. When Chamisa lost the secretary general polls to Mwonzvora under unclear circumstances where it was suggested that MT might have been involved in the plan to oust Chamisa leading to Mwonzvora’s victory. The young man humbled himself as a mere card carrying member until MT himself realized this young man was indeed a real leader.
    3. Chamisa’s contact in parliament shows he is indeed a committed leader who is very much involved in the governance issues of our nation. He has always been consistent in making sure that ZANU Pf adhere to constitutionalism.
    4. All of us are also guilty of violation of the constitution directly or indirectly by or supporting the same. We all marched and forced Mugabe out of power using the state institutions army in particular. Mugabe had the mandate to rule until the next election but we lost confidence in him hence we violated the constitution or supported the violation and forced him out. Why do the same people whose hands are so dirty like Kupe, Gutu and friends want to act as though they are saints as far as constitutionalism is concerned. When the ouster of Mugabe, Mangoma and Biti favored them, they supported it. Please allow this young man to save us from the shackles of poverty and misrule from the current regime. Do not hide behind the finger (constitution) which you seemingly neither read nor understand.
    5. The reason why there are always two lawyers arguing a case in the courts of law is that interpretations can differ such that either one of the two lawyers would be wanting to deliberately arm twist the provisions of the matter at hand or it may be purely misunderstanding of the facts at hand. Kupe and your stop being paveyers of hatred toward this youthful leader Chamisa. You and me know that he is the man to serve this nation from the shame we are in now.

All the current happenings just but confirms a misguided element she is and as such MDC should proceed to expel them as they have shown that they want to cause problems in the ship. Her quest for power has overtaken her sense of reason and a sound mind and there is no need to shade tears for such a looser. You have respected her enough so let her be and move on. Time will be the judge between you and her.

  2. look now you only met tsvangson wen he was six fit down during good times you were ignoring his meetings, demanding private places to discuss yo grievances ,citing Harare as un safe city for yo safety prefering blwyo better . Now blwyo has turned ugly agnst u shame to u. yu must know that yu a fighting a losing battle without support . Chamisa has gained muscles during yo off route days in line with party processes

  7. So disciplinary action is enforced by Congress

  8. tendai chaminuka

Khupe that’s the way to go.take all the Southern votes and show these funeral coup plotters what democracy is.Zvakunakidza.Join hands with Welshman tobva tadii paya

    1. Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti are solely behind Nelson

  9. she is an educated fool, disciplinary action inobva kuCongress here or everyone answers to the second highest decision making body which is the Council ndeve Zanu amai ava and havana hunhu kunge Grace that’s why we won’t vote for her

    1. Siyanai ne Zanu PF and confront your issues the problem with MDC . They dont want to accept that they have issues. Instead it makes it easier for them to shift the blame or pint it to Zanu PF. How can you say your deputy president is a Zanu Pf

  10. Khupe has dug her political grave and will never rise again . Whoever told her that she is popular in Byo is misleading her. I live in Byo and I can tell you that people are so angry with this Makhokoba shabeen queen antics

    1. who hasnt dug their political grave ????? Tsvangirai is the cause of all this chaos in the MDC_T. he couldnt respect the party constitutiion by elegally appointing vice-presidents and that was not the first time…after he lost the senate vote he walked out and formed his own party MDC-T

  11. Anne chikara haana murume anotoda kupiwa gumbura kwe 3 hours hasha dzopera idzo kkkkkkk

  12. kungoita congress ndokupedza nyays.

kana zvanetsa TK n NC siyai mese mupe eng MUDZIRI vakanyarara ….. you r all power hungry

  13. Khupe is failing to understand that in between Congress MDC NEC can make/pass resolutions/decisions. Its the same NEC which she is part of that anoited/approved Chamisa and Mudzuri after they were appointed by Morgan that has now confirmed Chamisa as President. She should have resolved her issues with Morgan its now too late she is only embarrassing herself coz outside MDC she and her cabal are nonentities. Khupe can try Joice’s alliance but unfortunately Joice is more power hungry and would never let Khupe become the president.

  14. Comment…I think both MDC and Zanu PF have nurtured same fatal pbm, lack of legitimate and clear succession policy to the ultimate throne. To preclude illegitimate dreaming.

  15. Let Nelson Chamisa lead his own faction of MDC-T and let Khupe lead her own faction of MDC-T. It makes it more exciting. ZanuPF has got 2 factions also. The gloves are off. Never a dull moment in Zimbabwean tumultuous politics.

  16. What Chamisa is going to do is expel Khupe, Gutu and others in a few days time. Khupe must preempt this expulsion by expelling Chamisa and Morgan Komichi from MDC-T. She has to do so soonest.

    1. Khupe should be the bigger person and meet with Chamisa, not to be commenting and venting from the terraces. She should come down from her high horse and show maturity if she is to be taken seriously. Face to face dialogue will show that she is leader. All else is hullabaloo. “Servant leaders give up power and deputize others to lead.”-Skip Prichard…That is the power of a humble leader. Khupe can be become the greatest leader if she humbles herself, that could even leave Chamisa quaking in his boots.

    2. It’s currently an informal circus so you want it to become an official one???

The reason why there are always two lawyers arguing a case in the courts of law is that interpretations can differ such that either one of the two lawyers would be wanting to deliberately arm twist the provisions of the matter at hand or it may be purely misunderstanding of the facts at hand. Kupe and your partners stop being paveyers of hatred toward this youthful leader Chamisa. You and me know that he is the man to serve this nation from the shame we are in now. Otherwise just approach the courts for a relief that you desire.

  20. Madame Khupe is right, the founding values of the mdc were premised on democracy and clarity. Our President was not a saint, he erred when he made those unilateral appointments of Chamisa and Mudzuri after we had voted for Mwonzora ahead of Chamisa. Trying Zanunise someone who differs opinion with you is very very stupid. in the Mdc we used believe in elections and the constitution, Madame Khupe was refusing to meet President Morgan Tsvangirai because she was protesting a democratic way that had been tempered with not because she hated him. Now the rot is continuing and there is fighting all over. We agreed in the infancy stages of our party that Mdc was not to be personalised, Zanu failed to rotate leaders, uphold the constitution, respect the rule of law etc, violence and now these ills have invaded our party.

  21. NGOZIYAMUKA

ndakamboona munhu achirumwa ne VAMPIRE akachinja kuita VAMPIRE, musakanganwa kuti KHUPE akambokiswa paruoko goreriya!!! MARESULTS!

    1. i think some comments have no common sense in them

  23. Khupe is desparate to form an alliance with Mujuru with Mujuru being the leader do that wr s used to vote Mujuru to pwer. So she desperatetly wants to be leader of this massive movement for the plan to work. She wants to sell us out. Even the late MT realised this hence the appoinments of Chamisa and Mudzuri.we should only thank the late for the apponintments otherwise taingomuka tava vanhu vaMujuru.Sorry Khupe its game ove, you a free to form your party.

  24. Ngondi Kamupinya

    Jobs,jobs,jobs…Khupe,khupe,khupe…..

  25. Khupe is desperate to form an alliance with Mujuru being the leader. To achieve that she needs to be the leader of this massive movement and so we will be used to elevate Mujuru to power. Even the late MT realized this hence the appointments of Chamisa and Mudzuri. Thanks to our late great leader otherwise taingomuka tava vanhu vaMujuru. Thats why Khupe will do anything to achieve this including sinking to lowest levels imaginable. So Khupe its game over, you a free to form your own party. You can’t even attend a rally because you a scared of the people you claim to be leading. Shame on you. Its a good thing that you want to try your luck at the polls. See you there.
