A GWERU-BASED technology company Netcoms has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rwanda-based Pascal Technologies (Ltd) for the transfer of skills to enable the introduction of a smart tap and go card that will help commuters pay transport fares electronically, the Southern Eye has established.

Netcoms research and development officer, Lovejoy Matare said Pascal Technologies was already implementing the smart tap and go card for the transport sector in Rwanda.
“This technology has proved a success in Rwanda where we adopted it,” he said.
“In order for us to be fully-oriented to the system we engaged various parastatals and companies in Rwanda. We signed an MoU with Pascal Technologies Ltd, a leading technology company in Rwanda which installs and supports electronic payment systems for transfer of technology so that we are able to implement it back home.”
Matare said the service would enable transport companies to become more efficient, boost revenue as well as improve management for the customer and the transport companies.
He said Netcoms officials were recently in Rwanda, where they met with officials from Rwanda Utilities Regulation Authority, Private Sector Federation and Rwanda National Police to fully appreciate how the government was benefiting from the technology.
“Our objective, as a company, is to strengthen and advance Information and Communication Technologies in as far as transport and communication in Zimbabwe is concerned,” he said.

“Our services range from electronic payment systems for commuter omnibus, buses and taxis to vehicle monitoring and tracking for companies and individuals.”
Matare said holders of tap and go cards can top up through agents stationed at all bus terminuses.
He said installation of electronic payment machines has already started for all routes in Gweru and the coverage will soon be extended to all Harare and Bulawayo routes.
