I resigned for peace’s sake: Mugabe

FORMER President Robert Mugabe told visiting African Union (AU) chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat on Monday that he resigned on his own for the sake of “peace and development” following a military intervention in November last year.

BY Everson Mushava/Kudzai Muchenjekwa

Addressing journalists in Harare after a three-day working visit, Mahamat said his mission was to get first-hand information regarding the military’s role in Mugabe’s ouster.

“I met him (Mugabe), we exchanged views, and he also explained why he resigned. It was for peace and development of the country. And we appreciated that very much,” he said.

“This was the first time I was visiting the country. I could not go without meeting him. Since President Mugabe forms part of the heroes of who fought for the independence of Zimbabwe and the continent, he is a common heritage for us.”

But sources claimed that the veteran politician spilled the beans and told the AU envoy that he was pushed out by the military, which imposed Mnangagwa as his successor.

The AU has since endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s takeover as Mugabe’s successor.

Well-placed sources told NewsDay Mugabe disclosed to the AU envoy that he was forced to resign by the military that now controls the ruling Zanu PF and government structures. He reportedly said the process that removed him from power was a coup.

Mahamat reportedly visited Mugabe in the company of AU commissioner for political affairs, Minata Samate Cessouma, Home Affairs minister Obert Mpofu, chief secretary to the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda and former Zimbabwe ambassador to Namibia, Chipo Zindoga.

Mahamat said Africa was satisfied that the transition was peaceful and “it is the responsibility of the AU to support and accompany countries in such situation in order to make sure that there is peace and stability in the country and all others have to respect the sovereignty of the country.”

“If there is any unconstitutional change of government, then we have our own instruments, we have rules that apply in the case. We are here to support the country in the transition and this transition has been publicly supported by the people of Zimbabwe,” Mahamat added.

Mpofu refused to comment, saying it was a foreign affairs issue.

Foreign Affairs minister Sibusiso Moyo was unreachable for comment, as his mobile phone went unanswered.

  1. Mugabe is lying that he resigned for the sake of peace,no his stoges were now upon his neck-witch.

    1. If the president believes that he resigned for the sake of peace, then kudos to him…We however think he resigned for another reason far divorced from peace…

      1. Well, he also forced Joshua Nkomo to sign the Gukurahundi Unity Accord and he agreed, even if he didnt like it for the sake of peace. So whats he mourning about?

    2. Very true @sandy the old man must have dementia he forgets he said Zimbabwe is mine!

      1. Facts are stubborn.
It is a fact that ED & Chiwenga conducted a military coup in November 2017. President Mugabe was unconstitutionally removed from power.

        1. So, whats the big deal? Why worry about thugs dealing with each other in the only manner they know best? Its just a case of one older thug, having been dealt with by the younger thug he groomed, using the same thug life methods they are both used to. So let the two thugs go to hell!

  7. The evil that man does follows them till death. Mugabe is still under the belief he was “the best”. The God given giver of peace to Zimbabwe. He is talking of peace….does he know the meaning of peace? I am convinced that he does not because all his life he has never experienced peace due to his selfish ego. Ngaanyarare kuti mwii coz he has nothing to contribute to the present order. He did a coup when he got to Mozambique and in 2008 and 2013 he did a coup on Morgan and he has the audacity to talk about peace…my foot!!

  11. BOB IS DUSTBIN MATERIAL AND ITS IRRELEVANT WHETHER HE CONCENTED OR NOT. HE BELONGS WHEREVER HE IS RIGHT NOW. AFRICAN UNION HAS NEVER HELPED ZIMBABWE SO WHETHER THEY ARE TOLD THE TRUTH OT NOT IS IMATERIAL

  12. Comment…This shows Zimbos really miss the old man. There are many articles with no comments but each and every article on him attracts many comments. If he was that evil, ignore all articles pertaining to him. Long live Gushungo.

  13. Mr Old man.Do you know why the World and Africa didn’t come to your rescue?Because they had had enough of you .You were hiding behind the constitution saying remove me if you can. Well they did. There is always that small print which the AU could have used to intervene but they didn’t. Play victim.forgetting what you did to the country and the people you killed. Don’t you ever start. We haven’t forgotten. It’s only that we are trying to move on.It has always been about you Robert.

  14. Cunning bob lied or its the AU chairperson who is lying or both

  15. I really miss this man. Yes, he did have his own mischief for the country but somewhere somehow he did not have executive powers the very first time he started losing to Save’s MDC. The junta did not want MDC to be in power, thus they had to force the old man to be in power while they were planning for their next move. The junta’s plan was about to be unsuccessful when the former first lady was now eyeing the high seat. So they failed to boot her out alone and instead had to boot out both the old man and her wife for them to be in power. All what happened in November 2017 (including the impeachment process) was the brainchild of the Junta. They tricked the masses as if Mugabe was the main problem, yet they are the main culprit. Why all along for 37 years were they supporting Mugabe if he was wrong? They only realised his wrongdoings when the old man was now turning against them! SO CAN WE CONCLUDE THAT IF SOMEONE DOESN’T HAVE THE SUPPORT FROM THE MILITARY, HE/SHE CANNOT RULE THIS COUNTRY (eg Tsvangirai was denied to rule, and now Mugabe)?

  16. “peace and development of the country”. He can fool other politicians but the truth be told he resigned to avoid the embarrassment of being fired.Telling the truth is very hard for him. Shame.

  17. I’m glad he’s gone and gone for good! I will never miss him.

  18. No Robert you resigned because you were cornered and had no friends to support you.

  19. No body will attend to your funeral, but only your step daughter and step sons and your zhuwayos -useless witch.

African black people are totally useless, they have failed to invent any machinery and good legacy which the next generations will use and talk about.Mugabe for the past 37 years in power, what good things has he done for Zimbabwe-totally nothing, but evil zanu pf people don’t see this. How can zimbabwe economically grow up when these zanus don’t want changes as if other countries are like zimbabwe? Come on people, investors will and will never throw their monies into toilet pits as long as zanu pf continues to govern zimbabwe. Investors desires to invest in a country where governments changes hands or swoop power regulary. Take my words.

Today you say he is a bad guy but as much as I remember the same people who used vote for him are the same people who are failing to Appreciate the fact that he the best he could for the country some of you are good in talking over social media if we give you the position as a president will you manage while you can’t manage your own house not talking of yourself have you looked on how you contributed in bringing Zimbabwe down the drain or you are just looking for someone to blame just view yourself on the mirror at a closer look before you speak. 1. Indeed… Thank you Comrade President RG Mugabe…
Some of us in urban areas and the majority in rural areas we firmly support you Cde RGM and will always do…

  29. Robert Mugabe, you forced Nkomo to enter into your one-sided Gukurahundi Unity Accord in 1987, against the background of non stop killings of his supporters in Matebeleland – didnt you? So, Nkomo also joined your ZANU PF for peace sake – to stop the killings. This time around, taste your own medicine and feel what it is like to be forced at gun point to do something you would ordinarily not agree with!
