Mahoka, Gandawa snub First Lady

HURUNGWE’s suspected two G40 heavyweights, Sarah Mahoka (Hurungwe East MP) and former Higher Education deputy minister Godfrey Gandawa (Magunje MP), were conspicuous by their absence at a function officiated by First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa in Karoi on Friday, amid reports that they had snubbed her.

Thousands of Zanu PF officials and activists thronged Hurungwe Children’s Home, where the First Lady handed over food hampers to seven children’s homes in Mashonaland West province.

Other top ruling party officials, who attended the event include Provincial Affairs minister Webster Shamu, Reuben Marumahoko (Hurungwe North MP), Keith Guzah (Hurungwe West) and Godfrey Beremauro (Hurungwe Central), Makonde MP, Kindness Paradza and Chegutu West MP, Dexter Nduna.

Mahoka courted controversy early last year, when she publicly challenged then Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa to declare his interest in succeeding then President Robert Mugabe.

She, however, made a political U-turn a few weeks ago, when she declared her willingness to work under Mnangagwa, following Mugabe’s ouster in November last year.

Contacted for comment yesterday, Mahoka denied speculation that she had snubbed the First Lady, saying the event was held when she was in Sanyati attending a funeral.

‘I was not around. I was in Sanyati attending my niece’s funeral. How could I have snubbed my daughter-in-law?,” she said.

Gandawa could not be reached for comment.

People, please, please some positions are symbolic by virtue of being associated with the numero uno not a constitutional obligation. There are ministers and civil servants who should address to some issues you reporters you are assigning the role the Lady. Very soon you are driving some people to assume roles not meant for them and the result will inevitably bring Zimbabwe back to square zero. My good gracious. My people perish because of lack of knowledge.

  3. nonsense…. reporting yakadai haidiwe.its pathetic

  4. Zvakutotanga so. Thats how Grace started. Saka kwese kwaenda first lady everyone has got to be there?

  5. its their democratic rights to choose to be there – we need to stop this culture of always wanting to please those “at the top”… dai ari ED akaenda KuHurungwe then it would be worth writing about.

  6. Don’t you think you are now starting to promote hero worshiping? Why should the first lady be followed where ever she goes? Nhai iwe Mangirazi mukadzi wa sabhuku ndisabhuku here? ED is the President not AM.

  9. only her secretary should be with her to take minutes, why should everyone else stop their business or justify their absence? Is everyone now expected to be an orphan at a children’s home like Robert’s wife did?

  14. This is how a culture of Hero Worship starts…there can be no question of snubbing unless they had been officially invited. Just because the good First Lady, (which is NOT an official title by the way !!), is in town does not mean that everyone should be mesmerized by this fact. If she really is on a mission of mercy then the act is its own reward… no need for hundreds of people to throng the streets and wave flags and flowers, this is not North Korea !!
This sort of journalism is both lacking in perspective of the very recent past that we have just escaped as well as blind to the (bright) future that we are hoping for.
    Stop It !!

  17. Comment…I remember the days of the late Sally Mugabe, she used to visit these orphanage centres and places like Mutemwa leprosy centre , hapaiunganwa nema party officials, she was on her own, with only bodyguards and her secretary.

  18. THERE IS NOTHING TO WRITE ABOUT. THERE IS NO LEGAL OBLIGATION FOR ANYONE TO BE PRESENT AT ALL FIRST LADY’S FUNCTIONS. EVEN WHERE INVITED, ONR CAN CHOOSE TO ATTEND OR NOT, EXCEPT THE FIRST LADY’S IMMIDIATE STAFF. FORCING PEOPLE TO ATTEND SOUNDS UNCONSTITUTIONAL…REMEMBER THE RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS AFFORDED BY THE BILL OF RIGHTS.
